Fairfield, CT
Fairfield is a diversified community of 58,000 located on the banks of the Connecticut shoreline, just over an hour from Manhattan. Originally settled in the early 1600’s, Fairfield grew into a farming center using its coastal ports to ship goods to New York, Boston and beyond. Although most of the earliest structures no longer exist, one can drive through areas such as prestigious Greenfield Hill, where eighteenth and nineteenth century homes, built by prosperous farmers and merchants, stand today. History lovers will enjoy the Victorian homes in the downtown area. One will also find an historic district in the town and dwellings of the Village of Southport, located at the mouth of Fairfield’s Mill River, where farmers found shipping onions to be a profitable enterprise.
As land values have increased and the community has grown and prospered, farming is for the most part a way of the past. A thriving area with fine schools and lots of shops and restaurants, Fairfield is a sought after town. Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University draw students from all over the globe.
Opportunities are plentiful for recreation. Fairfield has five beaches, two marinas and numerous lakes for water lovers, while inland there are camping and hiking facilities, tennis courts, golf courses, parks and a generous amount of open space.
Commutability to New York City is a viable option as Fairfield is located on the Metro North Line, with hourly trains into Manhattan.
